Homicide Near and Far

A bit of research will reveal that most of the US cities with high crime rates also host significant numbers of black residents — who are usually highly sequestered within particular neighborhoods. The graphic below indicates the type of statistical discrepancy that can be found between different neighborhoods inside the same city limits.

In high crime cities, a black person must work hard if he is to move himself and his family to a safer part of town. This urge to move to a safer place helps motivate those who are willing to do what it takes to escape the malevolent world around them.

In the US, correlation between proportion of black population and murder rates can be quite high overall. The graphic below looks at correlation coefficients between proportion of different ethnic groups in the population, and violent crime rates.

Within the Americas, one finds significant discrepancies in murder rates as well. North America and parts of South America such as Argentina/Uruguay have low murder rates on average. But Central America, the Caribbean, and nations such as Venezuela and Brazil have quite high murder rates.

One of the best ways to reduce a country’s homicide rates is to neglect to include most murders in your homicide statistics. This approach has worked for many nations in Africa. It also helps keeps departmental budgets down for public statistics bureaus. That money can be better spent by government officials on vacations to Switzerland, with a little banking business on the side. 😉

There are differences in gene alleles between different breeding populations, which helps to partially account for ethnic differences in violent crime rates. Gene alleles predisposing to violence are more common in subgroups of various breeding groups.

In central America and the Caribbean we see the confluence of genetic factors with a prominence of gangs and a very violent drug trade. Put it all together and rates of homicide are the highest in the world in Latin America and the Caribbean (as far as we can tell by the statistics which are kept).

It’s a dangerous world out there — both in particular countries and in particular cities and neighborhoods within generally low-crime countries. Best to stay alert, and make yourself Dangerous.

We need to know a lot more about the genetics of behaviour. Once we know exactly what we are dealing with we can go far beyond crude measures such as skin colour and zero in on the high value perpetrators. Skin colour is what is called a “confounder,” since the colour of one’s skin does not make one a violent criminal yet it can be associated with other unseen traits that are largely responsible for criminal activity.

For a number of years now farmers have benefited from GPS data that allows unique treatment of micro-growing areas; planters, fertilizer applicators, etc. controlled by a fairly decent laptop in the tractor cab access GPS data to control application of seeds, fertilizers, etc. for unique treatment of micro areas to reduce costs and improve harvest yields.

I suspect the criminal activity in any of the cities listed is similarly concentrated in micro areas which could also be defined by GPS data and sent to vehicle GPS units.

An interesting idea. If most crimes take place in a small area, such areas may deserve much tighter surveillance of a high tech variety, functioning even if all the street lights go dark.

In truth, criminality is as highly mobile as the criminal himself. While most crime takes place in and near to inner city residence areas, that is cold comfort to suburbanites who suffer violent home invasion or car-jacking. GPS will be part of the new wave of high tech security operations, but the optimal tactic would be to “tag” high value likely-perpetrators so that wherever they go on the grid they light up like a Christmas tree and give fair warning in advance.

Tattoo joints would be ideal for investigating and ID tagging of likely violent persons. Combine genetic analysis and RFID tattoo inks in one or more sessions. Electronic inks that actually emit light in bright colours at specific pulse rates when bad guys are in “trigger mode” or “predator mode” would also be helpful for security enforcers of the future.

Cultural change comes from within. If these communities changed the way their “groupthink” operated, that alone would reduce the violent outbreaks.

As well, just as bad teeth can be straightened by braces, outside forces that bring to bear OVERWHELMING FORCE can divert the culture, to a limited extent, down new avenues.

I’m going to be checking your blog again and posting more regularly. I’d like to tender a similar invitation for you to come to my blog and post comments as often as you can:

    See you there.

In many communities it is the criminal who gets the cash and the girls. Simple human male motivation, that does not change very much over the generations. In the old countries there is not so much cash spread about by well-meaning do-gooders. Europeans and Anglosphereans really do have good intentions.

Human genes sit at the heart of human culture. We live in an age of cultural engineering, but cultures tend to snap back to earlier configurations once the top-down pressures are relieved.

Revolutionaries in Russia, Cuba, China, North Korea, did not plan to make the people starve in the millions. It just happened from heavy-handed cultural engineering.

In the age of human genetic engineering, you will see genuine long-term cultural change from the inside out.

In your opinion does the tendency towards socialism also have a genetic basis?

        • alfin2101 says:

What do you think the twin studies might show? Ideology is group think and collective behaviour, something quite different from individual behaviour, especially extreme individual behaviour such as personal violence.

Still, sympathy to distinctly different ideologies might be inherited via heritability of personality traits such as the big 5.

Theorists have been forced to utilise the concept of “memes” as analogous to “genes” in studying “inheritance” in the ideological realm.

Ideology is like a contagion, one must be exposed.

A close look at university indoctrination suggests that political ideology has been biased badly by the one-sided skew in ideological loyalties of faculty and staff since the 1970s, at least in the universities of the Anglosphere.

If people infected the meme of socialism end up being selected against. There will evolve variants that are less susceptible to the ideology of socialism.

          • alfin2101 says:

In universities and several other cultural institutions, the socialism meme is an advantage. These institutions select for the socialism meme and become thick and putrid with it, like an abscess.

But several parallel meme selection processes are taking place, thanks to different levels of technology — all the way from word of mouth to electronic social media to encrypted satellite communication between co-conspirators. The old institutions are self-selecting themselves into an obsolescence that will put them at a disadvantage as new generations of more agile and facile institutions begin to grow out of alternative meme selection processes.
