Dark Star: A Cult Classic and Its Making

This is the full movie “Dark Star” from 1974 — before Star Wars, before Alien, but six years after the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is hilarious for its combination of gallows humor with slapstick and ultra-low budget special effects. The complete budget for the film was $60,000. While we may be glad they don’t make them like this any more, we are grateful that they made this one exactly this way.

For those who want to know more about the backstory of Dark Star and details about how it was made, the video below is a lucky discovery that may be appreciated by long time fans of the above classic. It was a student film that came from USC film school students John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon. For all its designed kookiness, it has been rated as one of the top 20 science fiction films of all time.

The Making of Dark Star 1974

Never trust anyone who has never read 1984 or Atlas Shrugged. And especially never trust anyone who has never seen Dark Star.
